Miners Days 2015 September 19 - 20 at Guercio Ball Field

Nederland's past has been closely tied to mining. From 1859 to the 1880s Nederland served as a supply depot and mill center for the silver boom in nearby Caribou. The discovery of gold around 1899 in Eldora revived area's fortunes. In 1905 miners discovered that the valley was rich in tungsten, a substance that is used for hardening steel. During World War I, Nederland became the center of world tunsten production. During this time Nederland flourished while tungsten Mining and milling continued until the 1970s. Gold is still mined in Caribou today.

Once a year Nederland celebrates its beginnings and heritage with the Miners' Days Celebration. For two days Nederland comes alive again as real miners, both men and women, with amazing skills compete in spike driving, jackleg drilling, bow sawing, mucking, and single jack rock drilling and double jack rock drilling.

Not a miner? Events like mucking and bow sawing are open to all and cash prizes are awarded to the top five finishers. There are also competitions and activities for kids including panning for gold, mucking, watermelon eating and many more.
